What a corker!!
Who would have believed that we could find 120kg of 1p and 2p pieces and cover an area of approximately 12 square metres in the Dance & Drama Studio. (We reckon that this amounts to about £330)

The children were challenged to work out how many coins it would take to cover the floor of the Dance & Drama Studio. Correct solutions were received from Dora Davies-Evitt, Jessie Forster, Phoebe Grant, Emily Bedford and Lucy Vernon. The solution can be found at the foot of the page for those of you who are interested.

The children and staff also paid £1 to come to school in play clothes and this raised a further £240. Giving a grand total of around £570

The Dance & Drama Studio is 6.05m by 10.57m
1p is 20mm diameter
2p is 25mm diameter
Using 1p pieces
You can set out a grid of 302 x 528 coins.
This amounts to 159456 coins (£1594.50)
Using 2p pieces
You can set out a grid of 242 x 422 coins.
This amounts to 102124 coins (£2042.48)
Of course you could arrange the coins using hexagonal close packing rather than square packing. I leave the solution of that problem to you!
