Introduction to Music

The Orr Music School is home to the lively Music Department, offering children the opportunity to learn instruments, sing in one of the two choirs, play in the orchestra, compose music in its composition suite (with 20 imacs) or mix CDs in the recording studio.

The Music School’s aim is to enthuse as many students as possible with a love of music. We offer a wide variety of ensembles, clubs and activities with regular performances every term of various types, including formal concerts in Sunday Best, informal concerts, cushion concerts in the music room and a termly Rock concert.

We also have an annual music competiton which includes every member of the school. The Chapel Choir sings regularly in Sunday evensong services and also in Christmas, confirmation and other special services. There are frequent performances from the 5 vocal ensembles and in addition to this, the clarinet and saxophone ensemble, flute choir, concert band and rock groups perform termly to a packed auditorium.

There are theory and oral lessons for those keen on becoming well-rounded musicians and there are 20 professional visting music teachers who offer lessons on piano, guitar, voice, violin, cello, recorder, flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, french horn and drums.

Recent visits have included a trip to a care home to perform in front of residents and a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime trip to the O2 arena, London, where year 5 participated in a massed choir (2000 voices) performance.   John Mühlemann is the Director of Music and Mary Hall is the Assistant Director of Music
