Welcome to Brookham Nursery

Our 24 place nursery, run by highly trained and experienced staff help children settle into school life.  We all work hard to provide a truly supportive atmosphere and with a high staff-to-pupil ratio we can really care for your child and get to know them properly from day one and provide education tailored to your child's individual interests and needs.

The Nursery is run by Mrs Liezel van Wyk a Nursery teacher with years of experience and success. The team is completed by three equally experienced assistants, who ensure that the children get the best possible start to their education.

The Nursery is known as our ‘Bear Cubs’. Children can enter as a Little Bear Cub at the beginning of the term during which they will turn three years of age.  Children who join 'Big Bear Cubs' in the September following their third birthday and will turn four during the academic year. They may attend Big Bear Cubs any day of the week, and any combination of morning and/or afternoon sessions, up to full time, five days a week.

The atmosphere within our Nursery is ordered and purposeful. It is a place where routines are established, expectations are made explicit and the children grow and develop in independence and confidence until they are ready to move up to Reception.

Children leave the Nursery and go up to Reception in the September following their fourth birthday. The two years in the Nursery and the year in Reception constitute the Early Years Foundation Stage and form the basis of our Early Years Education at Brookham.

We have a creative stimulating classroom environment in the Nursery.  The classroom is calm and an inviting space.  The area will help the children to be creative learners and thinkers with lots of books, visual materials and activities for the children to choose from.

We provide childcare for working parents with 'Before School Care' from 8.00am, and an 'After School Care' facility from 3.15pm until 5.30pm.  Additional charges apply for After School Care.

The Big Bears morning session runs from 8.15am onwards. Lunch is held at 11.45am and children will join the rest of the school for a hot lunch in the dining room at Highfield where they sit together with their teachers. Afternoon sessions run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm.

During the morning sessions there will be Music, Spanish, Computing, Outdoor Learning, a PE lesson or a swimming lesson in the school pool, all taught by specialist teachers.

The afternoon sessions are well planned to develop each and every child according to the Early Years Foundation Goals through a mixture of free play and more structured activities.

Throughout the day there are many opportunities to play outside and the Nursery have their own secure outside play area with play houses, ride on toys, climbing equipment and open areas. Our Nursery provides a safe, welcoming environment for our youngest children.

Settling In

We invite each child for a visit in the term preceding entry so that they get to know the staff, the layout of the building and meet other children who will be with them the following term. We hold parent/toddler coffee mornings on Friday mornings which is a great way for our youngest prospective pupils to familiarise themselves with our school.

The visits and trial sessions prior to your child starting will hopefully have gone a long way to allaying any of your concerns. However, we operate a genuine open-door policy at Brookham and it is important that you feel free to ask us about any queries you may have. One of the most important factors for a happy start in these early days is frequent, informal communication between parents and staff so that we get to know each other and can build a trusting relationship that will last for many years.

Our aim is to provide a calm, secure and stimulating environment where our children come happily to play, develop and learn at their own pace.
