The Health Centre (also affectionately known as “The San”) is situated within the main school building and is comprised of a nurses’ office and a Resting Room (with beds and comfortable chairs). There is also a separate bathroom. Most importantly the health centre has a cosy, relaxed feel and is seen by pupils as a “home from home”.

The Health Centre is staffed by an experienced registered nurse from 0800 to 2000 Monday through Friday and 0830-1730 on Saturdays. Currently three nurses share this role. One of the registered nurses is on call outside of those hours and on Sundays when boarders are in house. The nurses live within a 10-15 minute drive of the school. Immediate First Aid cover is provided by the duty staff and Boarding House Team, all of whom are First Aid qualified.

There are surgeries five times a day for boarders and day pupils when the nurse deals with minor injuries, coughs and colds and anyone in need of TLC! Pupils with immediate needs (physical or emotional) are welcomed at any time. The nurses aim to provide care that leaves the pupil feeling valued, and this is seen as an important part of the pastoral care that the school offers. Whenever necessary parents are informed of the nursing care their children receive in school.

Parents are encouraged to register boarders with the school’s local General Practice, Liphook & Liss Surgery, Station Road, Liphook. After the boarder is registered, the GPs are responsible for all their primary medical care. Out of hours GP care is provided by Thamesdoc. In addition, the Haslemere Minor Injuries Unit operates a 9.00am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday service and Petersfield Minor Injuries operate a 0800-2000 daily service. Twenty four hour Emergency care is provided by the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. A member of the boarding staff will accompany pupils who need to be seen at the aforementioned locations.

Prior to entering Highfield School, a medical history of the prospective pupil is sought and the appropriate form is completed by the parent. Any specific issue requiring medical care would be discussed fully with the School Nurses and if necessary the School Doctors before the pupil is accepted.
