It is assumed that a child who attends Brookham, the Highfield Pre-Prep, will automatically transfer to Highfield Prep for Year 4 at the age of 8+ unless the Brookham Headteacher has advised the child’s parents in good time (usually a year in advance of transfer date) that Highfield would not be appropriate. Of course parents are entirely at liberty to send their child to another school other than Highfield should they so wish.

During Year 3 Brookham pupils are prepared for entry to Highfield to help facilitate a smooth transition. Many of the systems and structures your child is used to will remain the same at Highfield and they will already of course be familiar with the buildings and grounds, however throughout the year the schools take the opportunity to work more closely together. Year 3 attend Chapel regularly with Year 4 and some subjects are also taught by Highfield teachers which helps the Year 3 children to feel part of the wider community, alleviate any anxiety and encourages them to feel welcomed and excited to begin this new important stage in their education.

As part of the induction programme Year 3 have a ‘Moving Up’ day at Highfield and parents are invited to a meeting at Highfield to meet the staff and find out more about Year 4. New Highfield parents are also invited to a coffee morning at the Headmaster’s House.

The school day changes during Year 3, finishing at the later time of 4.30pm every day except Wednesday to prepare children for the longer school day at Highfield. We provide Prep time from 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m during which the children will have a short break with a snack and will then continue with the prep set for that day. Homework is provided which consists of weekly spellings, daily reading and times tables at least 2 times a week.

For more information on entry to Highfield visit the ‘Moving up to Highfield’ page under the Admissions area of the Brookham website.

Further information on Year 4 may be found in the ‘Year 4 Parents’ Booklet’ available to download on the Parents & Pupils area of the Highfield website.
