What a corker!!
Who would have believed that we could find 120kg of 1p and 2p pieces and cover an area of approximately 12 square metres in the Dance & Drama Studio. (We reckon that this amounts to about £330)
![]() It had to begin somewhere. |
![]() At least they can fall back on a job laying laminate floors! |
![]() Even the younger children are given the opportunity to learn about manual labour |
![]() Penny Line! (Musical pun intended) |
The children were challenged to work out how many coins it would take to cover the floor of the Dance & Drama Studio. Correct solutions were received from Dora Davies-Evitt, Jessie Forster, Phoebe Grant, Emily Bedford and Lucy Vernon. The solution can be found at the foot of the page for those of you who are interested.
![]() Almost there |
![]() The final push. |

The children and staff also paid £1 to come to school in play clothes and this raised a further £240. Giving a grand total of around £570
![]() At last! |
![]() Now all I need to do is count them. |
Solution.
The Dance & Drama Studio is 6.05m by 10.57m
1p is 20mm diameter
2p is 25mm diameter
Using 1p pieces
You can set out a grid of 302 x 528 coins.
This amounts to 159456 coins (£1594.50)
Using 2p pieces
You can set out a grid of 242 x 422 coins.
This amounts to 102124 coins (£2042.48)
Of course you could arrange the coins using hexagonal close packing rather than square packing. I leave the solution of that problem to you!
