World War II Day

Tuesday 11th November was a memorable day in more ways than one. We commemorated Armistice Day with a moving Chapel Service led by Year 8 pupils, who read their own thought provoking War poems inspired by their recent trip to the Normandy D-Day landing beaches and cemeteries of northern France. This was followed by a themed lunch, with a WW2 menu and the Dining Room decorated with appropriate posters and flags. During the afternoon, Year 4 went back in time to the Blitz, where they could never be sure when the next air raid siren would sound. With part of the Dining Room in ‘black out’ Mr Riley, our Catering Manager, talked to the children about rationing and how people coped during the war years. They completed a quiz which was followed by the opportunity to make biscuits using typical ingredients available at the time. There were some interesting cooking methods used, but all enjoyed the finished product!
