GEOGRAPHY AT HIGHFIELD SCHOOL

The aims of Geography teaching at Highfield School are to instil in the children knowledge of the physical world around them and the human interactions within it, to encourage them to explore our world and to foster in them a caring attitude towards it and its people and to develop an understanding of the problems our planet and people face..

We also have a duty to ensure that the pupils in our care are given every opportunity to reach the highest academic standard of which they are capable in order to achieve exam success at senior school entry.

The scheme of work is built around the I.S.E.B. (Independent schools Examination Board) Common Entrance syllabus and the D.F.E. (Department for Education) National curriculum. It is intended to present the highest quality of Geography teaching and to foster links with other areas of the curriculum.

STAFF.

Mr. M. Shaw is the head of department and is currently responsible for the teaching of Geography to Years 5, 6, 7 and 8. These classes currently receive three lessons per week.

Geography teaching in Year 4 is done by the class teachers and is co-ordinated by Mrs S. Jameson.

FIELDWORK.

The department is trying to develop a fieldwork programme for each year group. At present Year research their Common Entrance project whilst on a residential study week in Normandy. The remaining year groups currently make use of the school grounds but it is hoped that they will have the opportunity to develop their skills on future residential visits.
