Food
We appreciate that food is a very important subject for children, especially school food. We are catered for by Brookwood, a commercial catering company, and we are lucky to have a Catering Manager who is flexible and imaginative. All food is fresh and locally sourced and is cooked in our modern kitchens which meet all current requirements. Nutrition is monitored to ensure a balanced diet for all and to this end, we have declared ourselves a "Low Salt School". Special diets (e.g. Muslim, vegetarian, allergies, nut allergies, anaphylaxis etc.) are all catered for by the Catering Team. Children who are fussy eaters are gently encouraged to at least try everything and are generally keen to eat after plenty of fresh air, exercise and hard work in the classroom.
All children are encouraged to eat well in order to thrive and to have sufficient energy to cope with the busy lives they lead at school. Breakfast is taken by the Boarding Housemaster and attended by all live-in staff. Every morning the children can choose from the traditional to the continental, they are offered a variety of cereals, followed by a hot main course, with unlimited hot toast or bread. Fresh fruit and yoghurt is also available and porridge with brown sugar is always popular in the winter months. Milk and tea are also always on offer.
At mid-morning and afternoon children are offered ‘Sus', which is voluntary and consists of fresh bread and butter, fruit and fruit juice. Lunch is taken as a family meal with Grace spoken beforehand. Members of staff are seated at either end of the tables and serve the children to ensure that they all eat enough and to encourage good table manners and conversation. Children clear away on a rota basis. A pudding or fresh fruit is offered every day after the main course and the children must eat one or other, followed by cheese and biscuits if they wish.
Tea at 6.30 pm is a choice of hot meals, a Salad Bar and unlimited amounts of fresh bread and butter and a variety of spreads and fresh fruit.
During the year we have a series of special occasions such as Christmas Supper by candlelight, Form Feasts and many others, as well as Theme Days when food is linked to a country or a special celebration. The children always enjoy these and come to see eating as a social occasion as well as a pleasure and necessity.
