Reading

Children will read every day, in some shape or form, in class work.  Each child will have a personal reading book.  These will either be selected by the teacher from a structured reading scheme or selected by themselves from the fiction library where there are carefully graded selections of books appropriate to their level of ability and understanding.  We aim to hear children read from their book 3 times a week in order to develop confidence, fluency and expression. They are encouraged to show awareness of, and use punctuation to enhance expression.  When tackling unknown words, children will be encouraged to implement a range of strategies including whole word recognition, application of phonic skills to word build, visual and contextual clues to make informed guesses and understanding of sentence structure to make sense of text.
