Year 7 Meet Sir Isaac Newton!

In this highly animated and very pacey lecture we were regaled with stories from his life and explanations of his discoveries in the realms of mathematics, optics, mechanics and astronomy. We learned of the difficulties he encountered as he grew up and tried to explain to his peers what he had worked out in the advancement of science and gained an insight into the man as well as his amazing ideas.

Year 7 are now aware of the extraor-dinary nature of white light that produces the spectrum, have been introduced to the mathematics of calculus (sorry Sir Isaac, fluxions!), Newton's Laws of Motion, the Law of Gravitational Attraction that tries to pull all objects towards each other (even if Ellie wasn't attracted towards Sir Isaac!), the workings of the Newtonian reflecting telescope, the amazing behaviour of Newton's Cradle and the strange effect known as Newton's Rings to mention but a few of the wondrous ideas that were explored.

Our thanks to the Science Department of King Edward's School for inviting us to meet Sir Isaac and to Sir Isaac Newton aka Peter Joyce.
