Swim School | Highfield & Brookham Schools
The Highfield School of Swimming welcomes all children aged 6 months to 14 years from the local area (Liphook, Haslemere, Petersfield) to our inviting, clean and warm indoor pool. We introduce them to the joys of swimming and help them to become proficient, safe swimmers.
We believe that learning to swim is an essential life skill that every child should have the opportunity to master, which is why when it comes to lessons our approach is focussed firmly on technique. This approach, coupled with only recruiting highly qualified coaching staff, means that when children reach the end of their time with us, they have perfect strokes as well as being extremely competent and safe swimmers.
We take technique very seriously and make this the focus for every class regardless of the level being taught. To us, technique encompasses everything from the basics of breathing correctly to body alignment, to strokes and kicking. We don’t progress children who aren’t ready to move into the next stage of their swimming just to create space for others. We recognise that every child is individual and will progress at a different speed from others – some need a bit longer to master certain techniques whilst others are born water babies who progress very quickly.
We select our coaches very carefully and only take those for whom teaching swimming is a passion. We believe that having this passion and enthusiasm rubs off onto the children and helps motivate and engage them in their lessons. Our team of outstanding coaches are all Level 2 ASA or STA-qualified, pool rescue qualified, have had enhanced DBS checks and are dedicated to delivering an excellent swimming programme. Each uses their own individual style during their lessons to make it fun and engaging, but technique is still at the heart of each lesson, so regardless of which coach you may have, you can be assured that all of them will help your child to become a proficient swimmer.
We follow the Swim England (formerly ASA) Duckling and Learn To Swim Awards schemes as we believe it to be the strongest curriculum for children to learn to swim. It focuses on technique and skills and takes children through all stages from complete beginners to advanced competitive lengths. We work on one stroke per week in the lessons and cover all 4 strokes right from our very beginner swimmer groups.

Autumn Term 2021
Term starts: Monday 6th September
Term ends: Saturday 18th December
Half Term: Monday 25th - Saturday 30th October (inclusive)
For group lessons: Lessons are available for children aged 4yrs – 14yrs (children can swim up until the end of Year 9). For 4yr olds, children must either be in a structured nursery environment or have started school (i.e. be in Reception) to join. The reason for this is because experience has shown us that children who haven’t been involved in a structured environment struggle to concentrate for the 45min lesson and find having to be still, listen to and follow instructions more challenging.
Children should be fully water confident to a minimum level of being able to confidently and happily put their face in the water. Due to the depth of the pool at the shallow end, children must be a minimum of 90cm tall from their chin to their feet. This is so that when they stand in the shallow end, their mouth will be above the water level.
For private lessons: Children can be aged from 6 months.
At the end of each term, coaches assess their pupils and award them Swim England certificates. Once the assessments have been carried out, we advise parents if their children need to move groups or not. This could simply mean a move to the next group up on the same day and time or it could mean a move to an alternative time or day. We endeavour to minimise day and time changes as much as possible as we understand that this can be difficult for many parents.
