Highfield Summer School UK

A unique opportunity to learn English at a UK Summer Camp owned and run by a prestigious English boarding school. Less than an hour from London, in 175 acres of safe, beautiful countryside.

Welcome to Highfield Summer School! We offer a homely environment for children and teenagers aged 8 – 15 years to learn English, and enjoy the same excellent quality of teaching and care that Highfield students enjoy during the main school year.

Intensive English with qualified, experienced EAL teachers

The three week summer course provides 60 hours of English lessons with fully qualified English teachers, with English as their mother tongue, to ensure the greatest improvement in your child's language skills.

We accept all levels of English on our summer course, from Beginners to Advanced. Students are taught in small classes of typically 8-10 per class, grouped according to their age, and proficiency in English.

Teachers use a range of methods to challenge students to expand their understanding and improve their fluency, including; role play, listening games, interviews and talks. Students have the opportunity to develop their public speaking skills by giving presentations to the rest of the school in our morning assemblies.

Academic and STEM lessons with specialist teachers

An amazing opportunity to learn and experience new lessons and activities.

Our aim is to improve your child's language skills while also sparking their curiosity to learn about a whole range of fun and exciting subjects, with something of interest to everyone. This is known as the CLIL (content integrated) teaching approach. For example, students study the relevant History topics in their classes preceding each historical excursion, they may study Geography topics such as Renewable Energy and the Environment including a visit to Highfield’s renewable energy installations. All students have a Science lesson each week with our Highfield Head of Science and have the opportunity to conduct practical Science experiments in our fully equipped Science laboratories.

Professional sports coaching

This is a very good Summer School to improve your English, to do lots of sports, and have lots of fun!

Team Sports are a major part of English boarding school life. Throughout the year boys play sports such as Football, Rugby and Cricket, while girls play Netball, Lacrosse and Rounders. Hockey, Swimming and Tennis are enjoyed by both.

To incorporate the excitement of team sports in the boarding school summer camp, each week the students experience a week-long introductory course in a different English school sport. The aim is to make each sport fun and engaging for all ages and abilities. We only use qualified sports coaches to deliver our sports programme, ensuring your child is taught safely and receives high quality skills training. Coaches also encourage children to develop ‘skills for life’; building confidence and instilling the value of team work.

How many children attend Highfield Summer School?

Our Summer School is a small, high quality course with typically around 45 international students, from 11 different nationalities. We have a strict admissions policy to ensure that there are not too many of one nationality, and that children are immersed in English at all times.

Where will my child sleep?

Our newly refurbished boarding accommodation is warm and homely, and located on the upper floors of the school building. There are separate sections for boys and girls, and children sleep in dorms with between 4 – 6 beds. The boarding staff also have bedrooms near the dormitories so there is always someone nearby if needed to ensure children feel happy, safe and cared for. A regular laundry service is provided by the Matron.

What is the food like at Highfield?

Food at our school is very important - just ask the children! We have a fantastic team of enthusiastic and dedicated chefs who provide the children with a varied choice of delicious, nutritious and well-balanced meals, cooked on the premises using the healthiest cooking methods. We are are very proud of our 5 stars awarded from the Food Standards Agency for environmental health.

Summer School students enjoy a choice of breakfasts (including an English cooked breakfast!) a three course lunch, and a hot supper in the evening. There are also home-made snacks available at breaktimes throughout the day.

What health care facilities are there at Highfield?

Highfield has a fully equipped Health Centre with a comfortable rest area, bathroom facilities, and plenty of space for private consultations. Our qualified and experienced Course Nurse will be the first point of call for any child that feels unwell, and with a Doctor's Surgery, Minor Injuries Clinic and two major hospitals nearby, medical care is readily available if needed.

As a boarding school, Highfield has been operating throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. We have established procedures in place for keeping children safe, and invaluable experience of managing with Covid, which means you can rest assured that your child will be in safe hands. Our Nurse is also able to perform an on site Covid Test should this be required.

Find out more about how we are keeping our main school pupils safe during the Coronavirus pandemic.

How can I contact my child during the Summer School?

Children are able to call home regularly and make video calls via Facetime, WhatsApp or Skype etc. using their own mobile phones, or our school ipads. However, due to the age of children on our course, mobile phones and other devices are stored safely away, and students are only allowed to use their mobiles during supervised phone times, or on excursions off site. This is an important part of our Safeguarding Policy to keep children safe during their stay with us, and to make sure that they actively engage, make new friends, and get the most out of everything the course has to offer.

If you're looking for outstanding English teaching, tailored to young learners, and three weeks of inspirational learning and great fun - do contact us! We’d be delighted to welcome your child at Highfield.
