The New UK Student Visa
The new streamlined process makes visa applications simpler and easier for international students who wish to study at UK independent schools. The following information provides helpful guidance if you are thinking of applying to Highfield & Brookham from overseas.
Notes for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens: Since 1st January 2021, if you are not already living in the UK with rights under the Withdrawal Agreement, you will need to apply for a visa for your child to study at Highfield & Brookham for more than one term.
Please also note that from 1st October 2021, a passport will be required to travel to the UK as EU Identity Cards will no longer be valid.
Studying in the UK
The type of visa required depends on the length of study. A child can study in the UK for less than 6 months with 'Visitor status'. For longer periods, you need to apply for a Child Student Visa under the new points-based immigration system.
Short Term Study (less than 6 months)
If your child will be attending Highfield Summer School, or joining Highfield & Brookham for just one term, they can enter the UK as a 'Visitor'.
Visitor status is usually valid for up to 6 months, and at the time of writing, costs £95. You can apply online for a Visitor Visa up to 3 months before you travel and you should get a decision within 3 weeks. Apply for a UK Visitor Visa or View further information and check up-to-date costs.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, and other non-visa nationals*, are not required to apply for a Visitor Visa in advance of visiting the UK.
All visitors of any nationality, must ensure that they do not exceed 6 months in the UK in any 12 month period. You cannot switch visas within the UK so if there is a chance you would like your child to stay longer than a term, you should apply for a Child Student Visa.
Highfield & Brookham strongly advise that you take out private health insurance, including dental care as visitors to the UK are not covered by our National Health Service (NHS).
* A non-visa national is any non-EEA national whose nationality does not appear on the list of visa nationals found in ‘APPENDIX 2: VISA NATIONAL LIST’
Long Term Study (6 months to 6 years)
If your child is aged 4 or above, and will be joining Highfield and Brookham for longer than one term, you will need to apply for a Child Student visa.
When applying through the new Student Route you will need to demonstrate that you meet the required 70 points. For a Child Student Visa, this means that you will have:
- Received a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from us
- Provided evidence that you are able to support the child financially for at least 1 academic year
You do not need to provide financial evidence if you have already been in the UK for at least 12 months, or if you’re from an exempt country such as the EU, EEA and Switzerland. View further information about financial evidence
At the time of writing, a Child Student Visa application costs £348 (View further information and check up-to-date costs) You will also need to pay the Immigration Healthcare Surcharge as part of your application. The surcharge is £470 at the time of writing and includes a 25% student discount. Paying the Immigration Health Surcharge gives your child access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Please note, due to additions made by the UKVI, in practice, the Healthcare Surcharge is likely to be higher: Check how much you’ll have to pay before you apply
You can apply online up to 6 months in advance of the course start date. Most people will be able to complete their identity verification through the new UK Immigration app without having to attend a Visa Application Centre. Apply for a Child Student Visa Online.
