Masterclass From Ruaridh McConnochie
2016 Rio Olympic Silver Medalist and Team GB Rugby Sevens Player, Ruaridh McConnochie, gave the Brookham Year 3 children a rugby masterclass last week.
The England international, who has played for his country in more than 20 tournaments around the world on the Sevens Circuit, visited Brookham and Highfield Schools to put the children through their paces in a number of rugby coaching sessions.
Each session consisted of a thorough warm up, team work exercises and some fun games to get the children focused on the main activity. The main activity was a series of short explosive sprints, involving side stepping, dodging and shuffling. Passing drills, relays and mini competitions completed the sessions and really engaged the children, who were hugely excited by the whole experience.
The coaching sessions were followed by a question and answer session with the pupils. Year 3 wanted to know about Ruaridh’s daily diet and training regime, how he first got into rugby and how he was scouted to play for England while playing at Gloucestershire University.
The final part of the day was spent watching the U12’s in their rugby tournament. Ruaridh kindly gave short speech and handed out medals to the Highfield children to reward their improving rugby skills, their positivity and sportsmanship.
We feel incredibly lucky to have had such an inspiring role model take the children through such a fantastic masterclass. We wish him all the best at the upcoming Dubai Sevens Tournament.
