Our girls’ U11 Hockey team take the silver plate
The start of Autumn Term saw the Girls’ U11 Hockey team take silver as they were crowned Plate Runners-Ups at the National IAPs competition, held at Hurstpierpoint College. It was a tough day as the tournament had attracted a number of talented teams. The group matches started and the girls dominated possession as they created more goal scoring opportunities. However, they struggled to find the goal when the opportunity arose. The girls ended the group stage with four draws and one victory (a 1-0 win against Brighton and Hove). After every group match the opposition coach complimented the ability of the girls. As we finished 3rd in the group we progressed into the Plate competition. The girls made it through by winning not one but two penalty shoot-outs. Super goalkeeping by Elodie and cool nerves from Isla, Summer, Imogen, Poppy and Selina allowed us to progress to the final. Highfield were up against Great Walsted.
A brilliant, fast-paced game followed, with many spectators calling it the ‘game of the day’. Walsted were fast out of the blocks and took control of the first 10 minutes creating a couple of good chances, one of which we saved off the line. The second 10 minutes of the half saw us come back into it, but there was no score at half time. The second half saw Walsted take control at the start again as we had to reshuffle our resources and they finally scored from a counter-attacking opportunity. Not to be deterred, the girls fought back and for the last couple of minutes put Walsted under real pressure, earning a number of short corners in the last minute, and one in overtime. But it was not to be, as Walsted kept us out to take the title. This was a great day for the girls, they supported one another and worked hard as a team. Well done to all.
