Year 1 visit the Rural Life Centre
On Monday, Year 1 had an exciting trip to The Rural Life Centre. The children took part in three different activities to get an understanding of what life was like in the past. They experienced a lesson in a period school room, taught by a strict teacher and used slates and chalk to practise their letters. Although the children loved the uniform, I think they were relieved that they don't have to do three hours of handwriting each day! The children also helped with Monday wash day.
They fetched water from the pump to fill up their tin baths, and scrubbed clothes on wash boards with carbolic soap. One of the most exciting activities was listening to the wheelwright and learning how a wheel used to be made. The children worked together to make a large wagon wheel.
