Highfield and Brookham Children Thank Awesome Emergency Services
Children in Year 1 have not only been busy writing letters to Father Christmas, they have also been writing cards to the emergency services’ real life superheroes including paramedics firefighters, police, doctors, nurses, the RNLI and the Air Ambulance to thank them for everything that they do.
In August 2018, there was a news article on the BBC website saying that ambulance crews were upset by notes left on ambulances while they were attending emergencies. One note said the ambulance would “be smashed” if it parked there again. The Awesome Movement was founded to change this by leaving thank you notes instead. The movement is not just aimed at the frontline people, but also the people behind the scenes, answering calls, organising logistics and supporting the people we see every day.
The cards written by children have been delivered to local emergency services including doctors and nurses at The Royal Surrey County Hospital, firefighters at Haslemere Fire Station and to the RNLI Hayling Island lifeboat station.
Michael Howard, Founder of the Awesome Movement, said
A huge thank you to all the children at Highfield and Brookham Schools for all the lovely messages they have written in their Awesome Movement Christmas cards. We have been visiting fire, police and ambulance stations and hospitals handing out mince pies and most importantly the beautiful cards. The emergency services really do appreciate them.
Sophie Baber, Headteacher at Brookham School, said,
Year 1 have been leaning about all kinds of superheroes this term, including the emergency services. Kindness is the attribute that we place first and foremost in our schools and the children understand how important it is to be kind to one another. Through the writing of these cards the children have learnt how the simple act of thanking people for all that they do for us can really make a difference to someone’s day.
