2020/21: An Academic Year to Celebrate?
What a year it's been! Having started positively back in September 2020, all schools in England closed for a second time in January 2021, not opening again fully until March.
As for most sectors, it was an exceptionally demanding year. Ever-changing restrictions to adhere to, rolling out testing programmes, the creation and delivery of online learning programmes, and supporting pupils not able to socialise with friends or participate in their usual hobbies and activities.
These are such strange times, but the return of laughter, chatter and learning is a very welcome sound that we have all missed badly. Our children are the heartbeat of our school

But this academic year has brought lots of successes too. Here are some of our reasons to celebrate the 2020/21 academic year:
Another fantastic year for scholarships to Senior Schools
Fifteen senior school scholarships were awarded to our pupils this year, for art, academia, sport and drama. This continues a remarkable run of success for our scholarship programme and is a key factor in parents choosing Highfield and Brookham for their children.
Two prestigious award nominations for our Pre-Prep & Nursery
Not only shortlisted as this year’s ‘Pre-Prep of the Year’ in the Independent School Parent Awards, Brookham has also been ranked as one of the very best nurseries in South-East England on the back of a wealth of successful parental reviews on daynurseries.co.uk.
Top Hampshire Prep School for Cricket
Having judged all schools against an extensive set of criteria including; commitment to cricket in the curriculum, facilities, fixture programmes and coaching, The Cricketer Schools Guide 2021 announced their Top Prep Schools for cricket and only one prep school in Hampshire made the cut, Highfield and Brookham Schools.
Awarded the title of ‘Silver Shakespeare School’.
We are known for the breadth, as well as the excellence, of our academic provision and this award from the Coram Shakespeare Schools Foundation recognises our commitment to the performing arts, and in providing inspiring opportunities for our children.
Success of online provision
The correlation between teacher quality and pupil achievement is well known, which is why we only employ specialist, qualified and experienced teachers. 94% of our parents said their children were highly engaged in their online learning during the Covid closures; a real tribute to the courage and creativity of our teachers throughout their own steep learning curve.
Excellent care for international boarders
While local boarders went home when schools closed, some international boarders stayed at Highfield during the second lockdown and enjoyed having our boarding facilities and staff to themselves!
Thank you so much for working so hard to give the boarders great weekends. We are very grateful for what you’ve done for our kids.
At Highfield & Brookham, we are also fortunate to have such buoyant pupil numbers – the largest number of new joiners in fact for the last six years. With Covid, and for some Brexit too, we feel especially appreciative of our agent partners and our international parents this year. We'd like to say a big thank you to those of you who persevered with us, and those who joined, or are planning to join us in September. We are very aware of the extra work and dedication involved in choosing to send your child to school in England at this time.
